LILA DOWNS AND VICI, THE LITTLE GIRL OF THE ALCALÁ

Vici is fourteen years old and has been earning her money with her music, playing in the pedestrian precinct "Alcalá" in Oaxaca. She plays accordeon and shares the attention of the passers-by with her three brothers and sisters, all earning their LEBENSUNTERHALT with their music.
Vici and her family belong to the numerous Native-Americans, who have been moving from their home-village to the capital, hoping to be able to live in better conditions.
The girl's dream of becoming a professional musician, seems to have become true, as Lila Downs, a half native-american, half north-american singer, worldwide recognized for her virtuosity, was walking down the Alcalá and striked by the talent of the young girl, playing the accordeon. She decided to include Vici in her charity concerts, she yearly dedicates to the "casa de la mujer", an institution struggling for the women of Oaxaca, their rights and the preservation of the indio-culture, threatened by the modernizing process in Mexico.
